The Unbeatable Duramax Engine
December 01 2017, St-Eustache Chevrolet
I am often compared to the Cummins and the Powerstroke. I was a big hit among heavy-duty truck drivers. I am the pride of General Motors. Who am I?
You got it ! We’re indeed talking about the famous Duramax diesel engine, more specifically the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine, available on the Sierras/Silverados 2500, 3500 and 4500 vehicles. Although its price is quite steep, its performance justifies largely its cost. Not convinced yet? Read the following or check it out at your local dealership, St-Eustache Chevrolet, near Laval.
A Bit of History…
The history of this all-powerful engine dates back to 2001. In collaboration with Isuzu, GM launched its first Duramax diesel engine on the Chevy and GMC trucks of the year. The DMAX joint venture was founded at that time. Since then, the Duramax engine has been a success. Shortly thereafter, all GM pick-ups, vans and medium-haul trucks drivers could tame it. Now, it is also available for heavy-duty vehicles, such as the Sierra/Silverado 2500, 3500 and 4500. Despite the popularity of this machine, the manufacturer located in Moraine, Ohio, has decided to limit its production to 200,000 engines a year. Of course, this did not stop consumers from enjoying this efficient product. On May 9, 2007, DMAX announced the production of its 1,000,000th Duramax V-8 engine, the most powerful engine on the market in the segment.
The Pride of the 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel Engine
There is indeed something to be proud of. According to Duncan Aldred, GMC's vice president of sales and marketing, "For many years, GMC's Sierra trucks and Duramax diesel engines have allowed customers to tackle the toughest tasks with confidence. With the new Duramax engine as well as other improvements, the Sierra 2017 heavy-duty truck combines refinement and capacity like never before."
No doubt about that. Drivers of Duramax-powered vehicles can benefit from a maximum torque increase of 19%, a record-breaking power never seen before by vehicles of the same segment. Apart from its power, we also speak of a quiet and stable driving, especially when towing and carrying loads. In addition, the 6.6L Duramax engine is equipped with a new control system developed by GM. This engine delivers 90% peak torque at only 1,550 rpm and maintains it at up to 2,850 rpm, which dramatically improves the tractive force of heavy-duty trucks. Its patent-pending air intake system also allows the engine to demonstrate sustained performance and maintain lower engine temperatures under harsh driving conditions even when steeply towing.
In sum, the quality of this engine is reliable. And the good news? The Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine is available with the Sierra 2017 heavy-duty truck.
